The Twelve Brothers in Silk, 12 martial artists named after the signs of the Chinese Zodiac, first appear in the employ of Mister Tan, a Singaporean drug lord. Posing as American mobsters, Wildcat and Black Canary attempt to fool Mister Tan into selling them all of his drugs, which would ultimately cripple his operations while simultaneously depriving the real American mafia of one of their main drug suppliers. But Mister Tan realizes that he has been set up after agreeing to the terms Canary stipulated, and in an attempt to avoid being ruined he arranges for a real mob group to buy his drug shipment.
The Twelve Brothers, led by Rabbit, accompany the shipment to protect it, and meet Canary and a group of fighters on the docks of Gotham City. The two groups agree to a duel. Canary's team consists of herself, Wildcat, Richard Dragon, Green Arrow II (Connor Hawke), Oracle’s allies Savant and Creote, and the Huntress. Before the fight can end in one side's clear defeat, however, Canary signals for her team mate Lady Blackhawk to attack the drug shipment, destroying it. Canary then gives Rabbit an ultimatum: with the shipment destroyed he has already failed in his mission. The only way the brothers can be sure to walk away with their record of never losing intact is to call a draw. Rabbit agrees, and the groups part ways.
A later issue will reveal, in flashback, that Tien Shi—the martial artist later known as Red Phoenix—was aiding the team from behind the scenes… and that he is the secret thirteenth brother of the Twelve!
